Concepts

Astrology

Astrology is the practice of interpreting celestial positions and cycles symbolically in relation to human experience. It turns the measured movements of the sky into a language for exploring patterns, timing and meaning, offering insights rather than fixed outcomes and leaving room for choice in how each person meets the moment.

Horoscope

A horoscope traditionally means a chart of celestial positions for a specific time and place, such as the birth sky of a person. In everyday language, it also means the short, sign-based interpretations or forecasts found in daily or weekly columns. One maps a particular sky while the other offers broad astrological insights.

Transit

Transits are the current dance of the cosmos. They are how today's planets activate your birth chart. They bring cycles of change, opportunity, and challenge.

Retrograde

Retrogrades are sacred pauses. They are times to turn inward, reflect, and revise. They invite you to slow down and reconnect with what's been overlooked.

Aspect

Aspects are conversations between planets. Some are smooth, some are tense, all are meaningful. They shape the tone of your experience and reveal where energies collide or harmonize.

Orb

The orb is the space around an aspect. It represents how close the planets need to be to make a connection felt. Wider orbs whisper. Tighter ones shout.

Cardinal

Cardinal signs initiate. They're the pioneers, eager to begin. They bring momentum, leadership, and fresh energy to the zodiac wheel.

Fixed

Fixed signs stabilize. They hold, sustain, and resist change. They offer loyalty, depth, and staying power when the winds of life blow.

Mutable

Mutable signs adapt. They shift, adjust, and make peace with change. They guide us through transitions with grace and flexibility.

Element

Each sign belongs to one of four elements. Fire ignites, Earth grounds, Air thinks, and Water feels. These are the roots of your soul's expression.

Solstice

The solstice is the year's turning point. It is when the Sun reaches the farthest point of its journey, bringing the longest day or the longest night. It invites you to honor how far the light has traveled, and to pause before the slow turn toward what comes next.

Equinox

The equinox is a moment of balance. It is when day and night stand as equals, the poised midpoint between the year's extremes. It invites you to find your own equilibrium, and to step into the new season with intention.

Lunar Cycle

The lunar cycle is a sacred rhythm. Moving from darkness to light and back again. It guides you through beginnings, growth, fullness, and release each month.

Waxing

Waxing phases grow the light. It is when energy builds, projects gain traction, and intentions come to life. It's a time to move forward.

Waning

Waning phases dim the light. It is when energy turns inward, asking you to release, reflect, and rest. It's a natural closing before the next beginning.

Sun Sign

Your Sun Sign is the zodiac sign the Sun occupied in your birth sky. It speaks to identity, vitality and purpose, inviting insight into the self you are here to illuminate and the life force that asks to be expressed in your own unmistakable way.

Moon Sign

Your Moon Sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied in your birth sky. It speaks to emotional rhythms, instincts and what feels sustaining or safe, inviting insight into your inner tides and the quiet conditions that help you feel nourished, held and at home within yourself.

Rising Sign

Your Rising Sign is your cosmic first impression. It is how the world sees you and how you move through it. It's the lens through which you meet life.

House

Houses are the stage where planets play. They are the 12 realms of your lived experience. They show where in life each planetary energy expresses itself.

Ingress

An ingress is a shift. It occurs when a planet enters a new sign and changes the mood. It signals a fresh chapter in how that energy moves.

Exact

Exact aspects are peak moments. This is when planetary conversations reach full volume. This is when you're most likely to feel the energy loud and clear.

Separating

A separating aspect is fading. It is the echo of an experience that's now integrating. The lesson lingers, even as the intensity softens.

Forming

A forming aspect is building. It is an energetic swell approaching its peak. It brings anticipation, preparation, and a rising sense of change.

Swiss Ephemeris

Software for calculating celestial positions and motion, along with astrological house boundaries. It provides the astronomical calculation beneath the data. What those positions mean belongs to interpretation, where mathematics gives way to symbolism and insight.

Ephemeris

A table or computed timetable showing where celestial influences are positioned at particular dates and times. The plural is ephemerides. Think of it as celestial reference data, locating movement in time before interpretation begins.

First House

The part of the birth sky connected with how you meet life, from your immediate presence to your instinctive approach and sense of self. It speaks to the way you arrive in experience and begin moving through the world.

Second House

The realm of resources, values, and what helps you feel sustained. It can illuminate what you treasure, what you build upon, and the evolving relationship between having enough and knowing what enough means to you.

Third House

The nearby world of learning, conversation, and everyday connection. It describes the exchanges that keep life moving, from how you gather and share ideas to the familiar people and environments that shape your daily perspective.

Fourth House

The deep ground of home, roots, belonging, and private foundations. This is where the outer world recedes and questions of origin and inner security come closer, revealing what helps you feel rooted enough to become yourself.

Fifth House

The realm of creativity, pleasure, play, and self-expression. It invites you toward what feels alive for its own sake, where delight becomes meaningful and something distinctly yours asks to be expressed rather than merely contained.

Sixth House

The realm of daily rhythms, care, craft, and the practices that sustain ordinary life. It brings attention to repetition and refinement, asking what your habits are shaping and how devotion to small things can become a form of meaningful practice.

Seventh House

The realm of partnership, reciprocity, and meaningful encounter. Here, another person is never only another person. Relationship can become a mirror, revealing how you meet difference, negotiate mutuality, and discover parts of yourself through connection.

Eighth House

The realm of trust, vulnerability, and what becomes shared, whether resources, stakes, or emotional depth. It asks what happens when self-sufficiency gives way to entanglement and when genuine closeness requires something more revealing than certainty.

Ninth House

The realm of belief, learning, broader horizons, and the search for meaning. It reaches beyond the immediately familiar, inviting encounters with ideas and perspectives that can enlarge the world you know and reshape the story you tell about it.

Tenth House

The realm of vocation, responsibility, visibility, and contribution in the wider world. It speaks to what you are called to carry publicly and the ways your choices, commitments, and work can become part of something larger than private life.

Eleventh House

The realm of friendship, community, and hopes shared with others. It looks beyond individual ambition toward the networks and collective possibilities that remind you the future is not imagined alone.

Twelfth House

The realm of solitude, rest, and what lives beneath the easily seen. Its terrain is quieter and less graspable, drawing attention toward retreat, reflection, and the inner material that may reveal itself only when the noise of ordinary life softens.

House System

A convention for dividing the sky into twelve houses, each interpreted as an area of life. Different house systems draw those boundaries differently, so an influence can fall in a different house while its zodiac position remains unchanged.

Placidus

A house system whose boundaries are derived through divisions of time between the horizon and meridian. Its houses are generally unequal and depend on birth time and location. The Ascendant begins the First House and the Midheaven begins the Tenth.

Whole Sign

A house system where the entire zodiac sign containing the Ascendant becomes the First House, followed by one complete 30-degree sign for each house. The exact Ascendant remains within the First House, while the Midheaven does not necessarily define the Tenth House boundary.

Porphyry

A house system that divides each ecliptic arc between the four principal angles into three equal parts. Each quadrant is trisected, though quadrants themselves can differ in size. The Ascendant begins the First House and the Midheaven begins the Tenth.

Equal House

An Ascendant-based system of twelve equal 30-degree houses beginning at the exact degree of the Ascendant. Unlike Whole Sign, the First House does not begin at zero degrees of the Rising Sign unless the Ascendant itself happens to fall there.

Quadrant Houses

House systems that anchor the First, Fourth, Seventh, and Tenth Houses to the Ascendant, Imum Coeli, Descendant, and Midheaven. Different quadrant methods agree on those four anchors while dividing the spaces between them in different ways.

House Cusp

The boundary that begins a house. Its position depends on the chosen house system along with the birth time and location, helping define where one area of life gives way to the next.

Ascendant

The zodiac degree where the ecliptic meets the eastern horizon at a particular time and place. Its sign is your Rising Sign, symbolically connected with presence, approach, and how you meet life. It is commonly abbreviated ASC.

Descendant

The zodiac degree setting on the western horizon, directly opposite the Ascendant. It is associated with partnership, encounter, and what emerges when your world meets someone else's. Common abbreviations include DSC and DC.

Midheaven

The Midheaven, or MC from Medium Coeli, is the ecliptic's intersection with the upper meridian, not the point directly overhead. It speaks to vocation, visibility, and public contribution. It begins the Tenth House in Placidus and Porphyry, but not necessarily in Whole Sign or Equal House.

Imum Coeli

The Imum Coeli, or IC, sits opposite the Midheaven and is associated with roots, home, and private foundations. In Placidus and Porphyry it begins the Fourth House, marking a deeply inward counterpoint to the Midheaven's outward visibility.

Natal

Natal means belonging to birth. Natal information is calculated for the birth moment rather than today's moving sky, preserving the celestial pattern of that beginning. That pattern is your birth sky.

Natal Chart

A visual map or wheel of the birth sky, showing zodiac signs, houses where known, celestial symbols, and aspect relationships. It offers a symbolic mirror for reflection and insight, not a sentence handed down by fate.

Synastry

The comparison of two birth skies through cross-aspects and house connections, interpreted as relationship dynamics. Synastry can illuminate attraction, tension, resonance, and difference without reducing a relationship to a compatibility score or declaring what two people are destined to become.

House Overlay

The placement of one person's celestial influences within another person's houses. These connections can suggest which areas of life become especially activated through relationship, offering insight into where another person's presence may feel vivid, challenging, familiar, or significant.

Progression

A symbolic advancement of the natal pattern used to explore development through time. In secondary progressions, one day after birth corresponds symbolically to one year of life. Progressions are distinct from transits, which describe the actual current sky.

Zodiac

A circle of twelve equal 30-degree signs along the ecliptic, providing the framework for zodiac position. Zodiac signs share names with astronomical constellations, but they are not the same thing. The constellations are irregular in size rather than twelve equal divisions.

Tropical Zodiac

A zodiac that places zero degrees Aries at the March equinox and anchors its twelve equal signs to the equinoxes and seasonal cycle. Its reference is this Earth-Sun relationship rather than a fixed alignment with particular stars.

Sidereal Zodiac

A zodiac of twelve equal signs anchored to a stellar reference. Different sidereal traditions can use different offsets for that alignment. Like the tropical zodiac, its equal 30-degree signs should not be confused with the irregular astronomical constellations bearing the same names.

Ecliptic

The apparent yearly path of the Sun across the sky as seen from Earth. It forms the reference circle for zodiac longitude, giving celestial positions a shared framework around which the zodiac can be measured.

Ecliptic Longitude

An angular coordinate measured around the ecliptic from 0 to 360 degrees, usually expressed astrologically as a zodiac sign plus degree. Also called zodiac longitude, it gives each influence a position that can be compared with others to identify aspects.

Geocentric

Measured from the center of Earth. Geocentric positions describe where celestial influences appear from an Earth-centered observing and calculating viewpoint.

Lunation

Astronomically, a lunation is the lunar cycle between successive New Moons, lasting about 29.5 days. In astrological language, the word can also refer to a particular New Moon or Full Moon event, where the cycle reaches a distinct moment of beginning or culmination.

UTC

Coordinated Universal Time is the shared global reference used to express time consistently across locations. UTC itself does not change for daylight saving time. One celestial event can therefore carry one UTC timestamp while appearing on a different clock date in local time.

Station

The apparent turning point where a celestial influence changes between direct and retrograde motion. The exact station is a specific instant, though its near-station period can stretch across days. Symbolically, that slowing can feel concentrated or suspended even though no physical orbit reverses.

Direct Motion

Apparent forward movement through the zodiac as viewed from Earth. After a retrograde period, an influence can station and turn direct, resuming its apparent forward direction.

Apparent Motion

Movement as it appears from a particular observing viewpoint. Because Earth is moving too, celestial influences can sometimes appear to change direction against the zodiac. During retrograde, the body's physical orbit has not reversed. The shift belongs to perspective.

Lunar Nodes

The two calculated points where the Moon's orbital plane crosses the ecliptic. The North Node marks the ascending crossing and the South Node the descending crossing. They are not additional celestial bodies, and symbolically they can illuminate familiar patterns alongside invitations toward growth.

Rulership

An astrological association connecting a zodiac sign with a ruling influence, such as Mars with Aries. A house ruler follows the sign on that house's cusp. Traditional and modern rulership approaches can differ, offering related but distinct symbolic frameworks.

Angular

A term connected with the four principal angles and, more broadly, the First, Fourth, Seventh, and Tenth Houses. Angular placement can suggest symbolic prominence or emphasis, though an influence somewhere within an angular house is not necessarily geometrically close to the angle itself.

Luminaries

The Sun and Moon, known together as the luminaries. Symbolically, the Sun speaks to vitality and expression, while the Moon speaks to feeling and inner rhythms. Together they illuminate two of astrology's most immediate languages of selfhood and experience.

Glyph

A written symbol representing a celestial influence, zodiac sign, or aspect. Glyphs create astrology's compact visual vocabulary, turning layers of celestial information into marks that can be recognized at a glance.
