Astrology has its own vocabulary. This glossary separates what a term describes from the reflective meaning Charted brings to it, so you can understand the language without needing to know it all at once.

AspectAn aspect is the angular separation between two points measured along zodiac longitude. Major aspects include the conjunction at 0 degrees, sextile at 60 degrees, square at 90 degrees, trine at 120 degrees, and opposition at 180 degrees.SextileA sextile is an aspect with an exact angle of 60 degrees. A separation of 63 degrees has a 3 degree sextile orb.SquareA square is an aspect with an exact angle of 90 degrees. A separation of 92 degrees has a 2 degree square orb.TrineA trine is an aspect with an exact angle of 120 degrees. A separation of 118 degrees has a 2 degree trine orb.OppositionAn opposition is an aspect with an exact angle of 180 degrees. A separation of 177 degrees has a 3 degree opposition orb.ConjunctionA conjunction is an aspect with an exact angle of 0 degrees. A separation of 2 degrees has a 2 degree conjunction orb.RetrogradeRetrograde is the apparent backward motion of a planet against the background stars as seen from Earth. The planet does not physically reverse its orbit.OrbAn orb is the deviation from the exact angle of an aspect. For example, a 63 degree separation is 3 degrees from an exact 60 degree sextile.
